Researchers used Raman spectroscopy to detect 1–10 µm microplastics indoors, finding a median of 528 particles/m³ in homes and 2,238 particles/m³ in cars.
Adults inhale an estimated 68,000 of these tiny plastics daily (children ~47,000), which is 100× higher than previous estimates based on larger particles.
Most microplastics are <10 µm and can embed in lungs, enter the bloodstream or gut, and carry harmful chemicals like heavy metals and endocrine disruptors.
