Russian Deputy Navy Chief Maj. Gen. Mikhail Gudkov was killed during combat operations in the Kursk region near the Ukrainian border.
He formerly led the 155th Naval Infantry Brigade, which saw heavy action in Ukraine, and was promoted by President Putin earlier this year.
A missile strike on the brigade’s command center in Korenevo reportedly killed Gudkov and nine other personnel.
He is the highest-ranking Russian officer killed in an apparent Ukrainian attack since April.
His death comes as Ukraine faces strain from paused U.S. weapons deliveries.
