During a July 3 phone call, Putin told Trump Russia will pursue its war objectives in Ukraine and will not back down from them.
Trump urged an immediate end to military hostilities, and Putin said Russia remains open to a political negotiated solution.
The two leaders also discussed cultural diplomacy, including exchanging films that promote traditional values.
The call took place amid intensified Russian strikes across Ukraine causing civilian casualties and infrastructure damage.
It followed the U.S. Defense Department’s pause in shipments of key air defense weapons to Ukraine, which Kyiv said could embolden Russia.
Ukrainian President Zelensky said direct talks between national leaders, especially with Putin, are necessary to achieve peace.
