Ukraine killed Maj. Gen. Mikhail Gudkov, deputy commander of the Russian Navy.
Gudkov was one of the highest-ranking Russian officers killed since the invasion began three years ago.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense confirmed his death in combat in the Kursk border region.
Ukraine had previously accused Gudkov’s former brigade of war crimes against civilians and prisoners of war.
President Putin appointed Gudkov as deputy chief of the Navy in March to leverage his combat experience.
