During a four-hour meeting in Berlin, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told EU diplomat Kaja Kallas that Beijing cannot afford a Russian defeat in the Ukraine war.
Wang said China fears the United States would then shift its full focus to China if Russia lost.
He rejected accusations that China materially supports Russia’s war effort, arguing the conflict would have ended quickly if it did.
Wang also lectured Kallas on realpolitik and shared Beijing’s view that Washington will soon turn its attention eastward.
This candid remark contradicted China’s public stance of being “not a party” to the war.
