Twenty-seven previously unheard compositions by Erik Satie have been discovered and are set to premiere a century after his death.
British musicologist James Nye and Japanese composer Sato Matsui found these works in Satie’s small notebooks held in archives like the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.
Most pieces were sketched by Satie during his time playing piano in Montmartre bistros and while walking between Paris and his home in Arcueil.
French pianist Alexandre Tharaud will perform these newly reconstructed works on a digital album titled Satie: Discoveries, out Friday.
The collection includes minimalist nocturnes in the style of Gymnopédies, experimental pieces with playful titles like Poil, and Parisian valses.
The release coincides with the centenary of Satie’s death on 1 July and will be featured in Satie programmes on BBC channels.
